Lake Como is surrounded by fishing towns and Renaissance gardens cascading up steep hills. In the distance, mountains and storm clouds threaten the tranquility of life. For two weeks I trudge with my easel to capture the gardens in paint.

At Villa Melzi in Bellagio, I am intriqued by the blue pagoda at lakeside. The garden is planned from the artist’s view of shapes and color.

At Villa Carlotta, I search for a shady spot with a view of Lake Como. The villa perched to the left upon green terraces.

Down by the lake, I wait to paint the lovely entrance fountain and iron gate when a large tree can shade me from the intense sun.
Villa Balbianello features a loggia looking from a precipice out at the lake on two sides. The loggia columns are entwined with 100-year-old vines. Shadows shift. So, on my second trip, I arrive when the shadows were in my favor. To my horror, tables and cases of wine block my line of sight. I am battling preparations for an Italian wedding scene. I smile sweetly and talk the workmen to hold up so I can complete my painting – in record time.
